Monday morning meditation

The house woke me up at 4.30 am on a Monday. Not how I like to start my week.

And before this turns into a horror story, I want to clarify that I don’t live in a haunted house. It was not a ghost of a previous owner or windows opening on their own that woke me up.

It was the sound of rain on the rooftop, strong wind flying through the trees outside and the heating system that automatically turns on around 4 every morning in the fall and winter. I woke up and realised that I can’t go back to sleep. It was somehow both too early for getting up and too late for starting another dream.

So I settled for something in the middle.

I made a cup of hot coffee, wrapped myself in a soft blanket and positioned strategically on the couch right next to our small library. Without looking, I picked up one book. It was Paulo Coelho’s “The Archer”, so I knew my chances of finding some much needed inspiration are high. I opened a random page:

Serenity comes from the heart. Although the heart if often tormented by thoughts of insecurity, it knows that — through correct posture — it will be able to do its best.

Knowing that I have an exciting week ahead, full of challenges and opportunities to prove myself, this piece of wisdom filled me up with courage immediately.

So I sat there, on the couch, wrapped in a blanket, hot coffee warming my hands. It stopped raining and I couldn’t hear the wind or the loud heating system anymore, it was just the right kind of quiet. I sat there in silence, breathing in and out and sipping the coffee every couple of minutes.

I was grateful for the moment I got to share with myself.

Maybe it wasn’t the house or the bad weather that woke me up after all.

Maybe it was my heart and soul needing some time in a state between dreams and reality.

Maybe this was just the reset button I needed to be my best self this week.
